Cluster a Workshop Brainstorm into Themes with FigJam AI

What This Does

After a workshop or brainstorm leaves you with forty scattered sticky notes, FigJam's AI can group similar ones into labeled clusters and write a short summary of the whole session. What used to be an hour of manual dragging and sorting after the meeting ends becomes a few minutes of reviewing the AI's first pass.

Before You Start

• You have a FigJam board with sticky notes already placed from a workshop or ideation session
• Your team is on a paid FigJam plan, since AI organizing tools aren't included on the free tier. Check figma.com/pricing if you're unsure what your org has, since FigJam plans are listed alongside Figma's
• The stickies you want grouped are all visible and selectable on one board

Steps

1. Find the AI feature

Select the sticky notes you want to organize, either by dragging a selection box around them or clicking each one while holding Shift. A selection toolbar appears near your selection. Click Organize in that toolbar.

2. Tell it what you need

Choose Sort stickies, then pick how you want them grouped: by Topic, Color, Author, Stamp count, or Stamp type. For a raw brainstorm, Topic clustering is usually what you want, since it groups notes by what they're actually saying rather than who wrote them or how they're colored.

3. Review and use the result

FigJam creates a copy of your stickies, organized into labeled sections, leaving your originals untouched. Skim each group for anything miscategorized and drag it into the right cluster by hand. If you also want a written recap, select two or more stickies and click Organize > Summarize to generate a short text summary you can copy into your notes or a follow-up doc.

Real Example

Scenario: A cross-functional ideation session for a new checkout flow ends with 40 sticky notes covering everything from payment methods to shipping complaints to feature requests.

What you type/do: Select all 40 stickies, click Organize, choose Sort stickies, and pick Topic.

What you get: The notes regroup into a handful of labeled clusters, something like "Payment friction," "Shipping concerns," and "Feature requests," each holding the stickies that belong to it. A follow-up Summarize pass turns those clusters into a few written sentences you can paste straight into a recap email.

Tips

• Run this immediately after the workshop, while the context is fresh enough to catch anything the AI mis-sorts.
• Summaries can't be edited in place. Copy the generated text into a new sticky or a doc before you start tweaking wording.
• If a workshop touched on real user quotes from past research, keep participant names out of the stickies before running this, since the sorted output and summary get shared more widely than the original board often does.

Tool interfaces change. If a button has moved, look for similar AI/magic/smart options in the same menu area.
